Charl excited for 'special' St Andrews

The South African Masters champion is in Scotland this week for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the prestigious Pro-Am event played over the courses of St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, and admits he gets goosebumps when he stand on St Andrews' first tee.

By his own admission, however, it took the 27-year-old a while to get to grips with the course, as he has only made the cut twice in seven appearances at the Alfred Dunhill. His best performance came in 2008, when he finished 13th.

He now feels experience has helped him discover the necessary tactics to do well there.

This will be the first time he will be announced as the Masters champion when he makes his way to the first tee, and he admits that it doesn't do his confidence any harm.

Marking the one-year countdown to the Ryder Cup, the two captains exchanged memories, extended compliments and sketched out their long term plans on Monday at a Chicago news conference ahead of the biennial competition that will run from Sept. 25-30.

While Love is eager to add a playing role to his duties, Olazabal, who represented Europein seven Ryder Cups as a player, for three wins and a tie, said he wants no part of the action this time.

"I will be part of the team but not as a player," the Spaniard told reporters. "I gave my word that I was going to be captain and with that comes a lot of responsibility, a lot of things you have to do.

"I think the Ryder Cup has become the third biggest sporting event in the world.

"There are many things you have to do that week and I don't think that you can do both things at the same time. It's as simple as that."

Love has appeared in six Ryder Cups helping the Americans to victory in 1993 and 1999 but earned his last selection in 2004.

The competitive fires, however, still burn bright for Love, who made it clear he will be trying to earn one of the automatic selections.

Of course, for any other player, that's no big deal, but Woods has set the bar crazily high. You don't hear him talking about the state of his short putting, or the state of his head. My guess is that's the true one-two punch, Demon No. 1 and Demon No. 2. I'm not blaming Woods for walking us down his own primrose path. He can do what he wants. He's no different from anybody else, trying to figure out a way to get through the day, trying to protect himself. You have golfers, like Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan, who were ruthlessly honest about analyzing their golfing weaknesses. But it's rare. What Woods is doing is no different from what Greg Norman did for years. It's way easier to talk about full swing changes than to talk about what goes wrong on yard-long putts. It's way easier to talk about healing a sore Achilles than it is to talk about the trauma of walking through a world where people know intimate details about your private life, or think they do. Woods's attitude, in all matters, is: It's none of your business. Any of it. He really doesn't like being a public person. That makes his life fundamentally difficult, because, you know, he's a public person. He's one of the most famous people in the world. It can't be easy, being Tiger Woods right now.

He missed putts against Yang, and he missed that one at Liberty National, too. Johnson, sitting on his bag on the side of the green, was shocked. "He always made the putts he had to make," he said last week. "How many times did he do it?"

Not only does make me feel good afterwards--newly cleaned clubs look great--but it also gives me some quiet time to inspect my clubs slowly and closely, which is something I totally overlook during playing season.

If you want to clean your clubs yourself, grab a few things and get to work. You'll need a bucket, some clean clothes, a tooth brush or something similiar, some mild dishwater soap and some elbow grease.

For your irons:

Important Tip: Do NOT submerge your club heads into the bucket of water above the ferrules!!!

For newer golfers, the ferrules are those black rings where the club meets the shaft.

Okay, here we go. Put some warm water into the bucket, along with a dab of soap. Don't use very hot water. Hot water can loosen your ferrules. Also, you only need enough water to cover the heads of your irons...not the ferrules!

Put your irons, club face down, into the bucket and let them sit for a bit. When you're ready, take one out and using the old toothbrush, give the grooves a nice washing. Use your clean cloth to wipe and dry the club heads. Make sure they are dry. You can also run your cloth up the shaft to wipe it down to. Do not put your clubs back into the bag wet.

For your Woods:

Never submerge persimmon woods into water! Many people suggest that you never submerge metal woods into water either. Doing this tends to fade their shine, or so I've been told.

My advice, and what I do, is simply use a wet cloth on my persimmon woods to wipe them down and then I immediately dry them off. I use the same old toothbrush I used on the irons to clean out the grooves on my woods (and, again, this is the real reason you're cleaning in the first place) and then I wipe them down again.

Cleaning your grips:

Unless you have a unique set of grips, the following works pretty well. If you have special grips, do what the vendor suggests for cleaning them. For the rest of us--

Put some warm water in sink and add some dishsoap. You're going to need suds (and lots of 'em) so give the soap bottle a good squeeze. When you have a small mountain of suds, turn off the water. Dampen a cloth and wringe it out. Then get some suds on the cloth. Use the cloth and suds to wipe away any dirt, oil, etc from the grip. Turn the water on, hold the grip under the water to rinse, then dry the grip off. Do your clubs one at a time and make sure they are dry before putting them back into the bag.

If you find a really hard place to clean, try some Windex on it. Wipe and rinse as before.

How Good Are You In The Sand?

Think about it, if you could convert 5 out of 10 attempts from a normal lie in the trap, how many strokes could YOU save per round?

If you're like most people, you could save yourself at least 3-4 strokes per 18 holes.

I consider myself a decent player and having said that, I played recently at Pilot Knob Park in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. I found myself in green side bunkers 4 times during my round. Let's just say my iron play was a bit less than stellar. I got the ball up and in 4 times out of 4 and I'm going to explain to you right now exactly how I did it and how you can do it too.

It is my belief that every golfer, regardless of skill level, physical condition, gender, or age, is capable of playing good bunker shots and converting the up and in at least 50% of the time. The following tips will set you on a solid foundation that you can practice and achieve these results.

1. Practice your putting.
I know this is a sand play article but if you practice holing putts 10 feet and shorter for 30 minutes a week, sand saves as well as all other shots become a little less daunting. If you feel good about holing a 10 footer, it takes a lot heat off the rest of your game so just humor me and work on your putting 30 minutes weekly. My saving putts at Pilot Knob Park were 3 feet to 8 feet and I made all four.

2. Use a neutral grip.
You don't want to use a strong grip for bunker shots because it's absolutely essential that the club face slides under the ball and into your finish without the club face closing. A neutral grip is one that has the back of the left hand facing parallel to the target line and the right palm facing the same direction. Slap your hands together in front of you and you'll instantly see what I mean.

3. Aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole.
You've heard all the hype about opening the club face and such and that's fine if you hit a lot of bunker shots but most folks don't so aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole. The target should be just left of the hole because the method I use will impart some left to right spin which will move the ball from left to right once it gets on the ground.

4. Aim your feet on a 20-30 degree angle to the left of the target line.
The greater the angle you create between your feet and the target line, the higher and softer the ball will come out of the trap. Practice these shots a bit with varying angles and you'll see what I mean. Find the angle where you're most comfortable and which produces the best results and stick with it whatever it might be.

5. Anchor your feet in the sand to enhance your balance and stability.

6. Swing the club out to in across the target line parallel to the line that your feet are on and keep the face of the club square to the target line.
The club should enter the sand 1 - 2 inches behind the golf ball and slice under it' into a nice full finish. This will produce a shot that comes out of the bunker and lands softly on the green. Your arms and forearms should remain relaxed throughout the swing. This will produce wrist action and speed through the ball which will produce a shot that spins and stops quickly under normal circumstances.

7. PRACTICE
It's very important for the average player to take as many variables out of play as possible. Thus the need for a neutral grip, and constant set up position. Practice and play with these points in mind and I guarantee you that your bunker play will improve
