US Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples confirmed on Thursday that he had already given one of his wild card picks to Tiger Woods - largely, it is understood, to kill widespread speculation surrounding the matter and any possible controversy that may arise from it in the run up to the event.

Don't count Woods out at the PGA

As Tiger tries to win his 15th major this week at the PGA Championship and does his usual scripted public talking before and during it, it might be helpful to remember that he is the son of a soldier and is an expert in subterfuge. In other words, he's not direct, not open, not forthcoming. I sometimes wonder if I'm a co-conspirator and an enabler, simply by passing along what he says. With Tiger, you really have to decide for yourself what's going on.

Since coming back from (euphemism alert) his November 2009 hydrant thing, Woods has played 19 Tour events and has not won. Of course, for any other player, that's no big deal, but Woods has set the bar crazily high. He has blamed his performance, particularly this year, on two main things: learning his new swing and healing his broken body. You don't hear him talking about the state of his short putting, or the state of his head. My guess is that's the true one-two punch, Demon No. 1 and Demon No. 2. I'm not blaming Woods for walking us down his own primrose path. He can do what he wants. He's no different from anybody else, trying to figure out a way to get through the day, trying to protect himself. You have golfers, like Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan, who were ruthlessly honest about analyzing their golfing weaknesses. But it's rare. What Woods is doing is no different from what Greg Norman did for years. It's way easier to talk about full swing changes than to talk about what goes wrong on yard-long putts. It's way easier to talk about healing a sore Achilles than it is to talk about the trauma of walking through a world where people know intimate details about your private life, or think they do. Woods's attitude, in all matters, is: It's none of your business. Any of it. He really doesn't like being a public person. That makes his life fundamentally difficult, because, you know, he's a public person. He's one of the most famous people in the world. It can't be easy, being Tiger Woods right now.

Even people suffering from Tiger Fatigue, as I sometimes do, can get drawn back to him with one round of 68, which he shot in last week's first round. He's about the only person in the game who is a total fascination. He and Stevie Williams.

Here's a minor mark of Woods's excellence, even now, with his poor putting and his damaged psyche. In those 19 events since the hydrant thing, he still had three chances to win, and they were all in majors. Last year's Masters. This year's Masters. Last year's U.S. Open atPebbleBeach. He tied for fourth in all three. This week at the Atlanta Athletic Club, even with the snarling rough and the super-fast, sloping greens that will make lag putting a nightmare, you write off Tiger Woods at your own peril. It's a major. He gets up for majors.

Getting to 19 major victories is the one remaining thing on his professional to-do list. All three of those T-4 finishes would have been wins with Tiger 2000 short putting. It was another seize-the-day moment, his specialty. This was just a couple of weeks after Woods had lost the 2009 PGA Championship to Y.E. Yang. He missed putts against Yang, and he missed that one at Liberty National, too. Johnson, sitting on his bag on the side of the green, was shocked. "He always made the putts he had to make," he said last week. "How many times did he do it?"

As for Tiger's head . . . I'm not going to go there. Too much guesswork. It must be frail. Who is he playing for now? Do his kids care about his Nike SasQuatch Driver? The Best Hybrid I Think

The Best Hybrid I Think

I have been frustrated in my attempts to find the correct hybrid for my game. I have tried a allot of them, and the one's that best stick out are:

- Callaway X Hybrid

- Mizuno JPX E600

- Ping G15 Hybrid

Up until I tried the Callaway X's, the Ping G15 was probably the best Hybrid I ever had, and I let them go, thinking the Ping V2 would be the answer. That was a huge mistake.

The Cobra Baffler Rail H was also real nice, especially out of the rough. The Cobra was about a club longer than the Ping G15's, but the lofts are about 2 degrees stronger as well. My knock on these is that I have an inside to out swing and the rails on the bottom tended to promote a push with the way I swing the club. Other than that, these are real nice hybrids, easy to hit and very long.

I haven't been a Callaway fan of anything for quite a while. I just happened to be at a driving range when Callaway was having their demo day and so I went ahead and tried out the Callaway X Hybrid. I was initially impressed initially with the set up. Even though they are somewhat offset (in the non-Tour version), I was still impressed how square they sit at address and that they don't have a "toed in" look, a hookers enemy.

When I hit the Callaway X's I was immediately impressed with the responsiveness, dead solid feel all the way up to the hands. They have a very crisp feel, a very "alive" feel when you strike them.

Ball flight is perfect. I have a tendency to error on the low side (low draws), and it seems that I always need more trajectory and carry, and these wholesale golf clubs fit the bill. Lots of nice, high carry (high launch angle - low / mid kick shaft) so the ball can land on the green like an iron, not like a fairway wood. Perfect for me.

They are super forgiving. The have a longer face from heel to toe than some hybrids, widening the sweet spot - making the club more forgiving on mishits. That is good for me. The have a nice curved, radiused sole, so they are very playable out of all kinds of lies, and are super easy to hit out of the rough.

Length - they are slighter longer than my past hybrids, and I think that is the result of a couple of things........they are very forgiving, easier to hit; they have a higher launch angle, thus the ball carries further in the air - giving me added yardage. I am not looking for a 4h that hits the ball 20 yds further than my typical 4 iron shot. I want to hit it the same length that I'd hit a 4 iron, just easier to hit.......and that's just what these hybrids do.

I am not a scratch golf, and I don't claim to hit a 4 hybrid 250 yards (like some do here). I am a 6 handicap, and the Callaway X Hybrid is the best hybrid I have ever hit. There now in my bag full time.

How Good Are You In The Sand?

Think about it, if you could convert 5 out of 10 attempts from a normal lie in the trap, how many strokes could YOU save per round?

If you're like most people, you could save yourself at least 3-4 strokes per 18 holes.

I consider myself a decent player and having said that, I played recently at Pilot Knob Park in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. I found myself in green side bunkers 4 times during my round. Let's just say my iron play was a bit less than stellar. I got the ball up and in 4 times out of 4 and I'm going to explain to you right now exactly how I did it and how you can do it too.

It is my belief that every golfer, regardless of skill level, physical condition, gender, or age, is capable of playing good bunker shots and converting the up and in at least 50% of the time. The following tips will set you on a solid foundation that you can practice and achieve these results.

1. Practice your putting.
I know this is a sand play article but if you practice holing putts 10 feet and shorter for 30 minutes a week, sand saves as well as all other shots become a little less daunting. If you feel good about holing a 10 footer, it takes a lot heat off the rest of your game so just humor me and work on your putting 30 minutes weekly. My saving putts at Pilot Knob Park were 3 feet to 8 feet and I made all four.

2. Use a neutral grip.
You don't want to use a strong grip for bunker shots because it's absolutely essential that the club face slides under the ball and into your finish without the club face closing. A neutral grip is one that has the back of the left hand facing parallel to the target line and the right palm facing the same direction. Slap your hands together in front of you and you'll instantly see what I mean.

3. Aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole.
You've heard all the hype about opening the club face and such and that's fine if you hit a lot of bunker shots but most folks don't so aim the club face down the target line which should be just left of the hole. The target should be just left of the hole because the method I use will impart some left to right spin which will move the ball from left to right once it gets on the ground.

4. Aim your feet on a 20-30 degree angle to the left of the target line.
The greater the angle you create between your feet and the target line, the higher and softer the ball will come out of the trap. Practice these shots a bit with varying angles and you'll see what I mean. Find the angle where you're most comfortable and which produces the best results and stick with it whatever it might be.

5. Anchor your feet in the sand to enhance your balance and stability.

6. Swing the club out to in across the target line parallel to the line that your feet are on and keep the face of the club square to the target line.
The club should enter the sand 1 - 2 inches behind the golf ball and slice under it' into a nice full finish. This will produce a shot that comes out of the bunker and lands softly on the green. Your arms and forearms should remain relaxed throughout the swing. This will produce wrist action and speed through the ball which will produce a shot that spins and stops quickly under normal circumstances.

7. PRACTICE
It's very important for the average player to take as many variables out of play as possible. Thus the need for a neutral grip, and constant set up position. Practice and play with these points in mind and I guarantee you that your bunker play will improve
