Charl excited for 'special' St Andrews

The South African Masters champion is in Scotland this week for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the prestigious Pro-Am event played over the courses of St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, and admits he gets goosebumps when he stand on St Andrews' first tee.

By his own admission, however, it took the 27-year-old a while to get to grips with the course, as he has only made the cut twice in seven appearances at the Alfred Dunhill. His best performance came in 2008, when he finished 13th.

He now feels experience has helped him discover the necessary tactics to do well there.

"I played Nike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver as an amateur in the St Andrews Links," he told europeantour.com. "It was special. It's only recently, the last three or four years, that I've actually started enjoying it, and I think it's only because I started realising how to play Nike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver.

"The first, 17th and 18th - if you don't feel something when you go down those three holes, there's something wrong with you. It's got that feel about it. Standing on that first tee atSt Andrewsgives you goose bumps, every single time you step up there. It's difficult to describe for someone who has never played it.

"There's a lot more to St Andrewsthan just a big open field. I sort of started getting used to it and understanding how to play it and now I really, really enjoy playing the Nike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver."

WhileSt Andrewsis his favourite of the three courses to be featured this week, Carnoustie is the one he is yet to feel comfortable with.

"I've struggled on Carnoustie before," he continued. "I'll play Nike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver differently from how I normally play it. I think I'm going to play it a little less aggressively on some of the holes. I'm going to see if I can play with a little more care. It might mean playing aggressively on some of the holes and less on others, but we'll see what the wind does.

"Kingsbarns and Carnoustie are very different from St Andrews. With St Andrewsyou can play it in the wind. Carnoustie is really difficult if you get it on a bad day. And so is Kingsbarns, where there are some demanding shots. But on the other hand, if you get Kingsbarns on a good day, that's probably where you can score the lowest. I enjoy playing Nike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver the most."

This will be the first time he will be announced as the Masters champion when he makes his way to the first tee, and he admits that it doesn't do his confidence any harm.

"Winning the Masters gives you a lot of confidence," he added. "It gives you a big boost. I honestly feel like I've been playingNike Victory Red STR8-FIT Tour Driver well since then. I don't feel like my game has taken any sort of dip or anything.

"The attention has quietened down a little bit. We now have four Major Champions this year, so the attention has moved around a bit, whereas the few months before the US Open were the most hectic."

Love looking to earn playing spot on U.S. Ryder Cup captain

Marking the one-year countdown to the Ryder Cup, the two captains exchanged memories, extended compliments and sketched out their long term plans on Monday at a Chicago news conference ahead of the biennial competition that will run from Sept. 25-30.

While Love is eager to add a playing role to his duties, Olazabal, who represented Europein seven Ryder Cups as a player, for three wins and a tie, said he wants no part of the action this time.

"I will be part of the team but not as a player," the Spaniard told reporters. "I gave my word that I was going to be captain and with that comes a lot of responsibility, a lot of things you have to do.

"I think the Ryder Cup has become the third biggest sporting event in the world.

"There are many things you have to do that week and I don't think that you can do both things at the same time. It's as simple as that."

Love has appeared in six Ryder Cups helping the Americans to victory in 1993 and 1999 but earned his last selection in 2004.

The competitive fires, however, still burn bright for Love, who made it clear he will be trying to earn one of the automatic selections.

"I'm definitely trying, I was trying to make Freddie's President Cup team," said Love. "I'm out every week trying to compete and play Titleist VG3 Iron Set with Steel Shafts well to try and get in the winner's circle again.

"I would like nothing better than to be in the mix but the number one goal is to win the Cup back and if I was one of the best five players on our Tour this coming year than I would like to play.

"Otherwise I'm going to get 12 really good ones and let them go do it."

Europe has taken ownership of the Ryder Cup winning four of the last five events and will arrive inChicagonext year as defending champions after a victory at Celtic Manor inWaleslast year.

The Americans have won only once since the new millennium dawned, in 2008 on home soil at the Valhalla Golf Club.

"I've played Titleist VG3 Iron Set with Steel Shafts on both sides of the pond and it's certainly easier when you're playing at home. It is the home field advantage," Love said.

"I hope our fans understand that it is a gentleman's game and they need to respect both sides but I certainly feel like we're going to have a 13th man because we are at home."

The two captains had a chance to get a look at the Medinah layout that will be the focus of the golfing world a year from now and both men gave the course rave reviews.

Medinah is no stranger to big events and has long been recognised as one of the United Statesgreat layout's having played host to three U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships.(Titleist VG3 Iron Set with Steel Shafts)

"Incredible history of hosting major championships and it's a golf course that you look out there every day, it looks like a major championship is getting ready to happen," said Love. "It just has that look to it.

"So a great golf course and a great facility for the biggest golf event in the world and I think golf fans that come here are going to see one of the greatest golf events ever.
